Mandarin
Although miles from the city's center, the Mandarin community has a rich history and has played a key role in the city's development. In the 1800s, Mandarin was a farming village where oranges, grapefruit, lemons and other fruits and vegetables were shipped to Jacksonville and points north via steamships traveling on the St. Johns River. Acclaimed author Harriet Beecher Stowe wintered in Mandarin from 1867 to 1884. While here, she described the region as "a tropical paradise". Today, Mandarin remains a vital part of the city's Southside and it offers every type of housing imaginable. From apartment homes to waterfront villas to gated communities, Mandarin has it all. The pulse of Mandarin can be felt as you drive along San Jose Boulevard or St. Augustine Road. As you travel, take note of the diverse mix of retail, residential and pristine vistas you will encounter from the many area waterways. All of these facets come together to make Mandarin one of Jacksonville's best addresses available in the region. Members of the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society work to continually educate the community about the region's rich history through its popular Florida Heritage Lecture Series. The public can step back in time with a visit to the Society's 1911 Post Office, which once served as the center of the old village of Mandarin. The Society also restored Walter Jones Historical Park which features a restored 1875 farmhouse, an 1876 barn and sawmill. One visit to Mandarin to take in all it offers and you may not want to look any further.
